With this year’s announcement that QuickBooks Desktop is no longer available for purchase to new customers, I am blown away at the significant impact it has had on my practice and training company in 2024. I know that many firms have already been pushing clients to move to QuickBooks Online, and some accountants I spoke to during Intuit Connect told me with pride that they do not take any clients using QuickBooks Desktop.
While I can understand the benefits of focusing solely on QuickBooks Online, the fact remains that nonprofits have been notoriously slow moving to it over the years. As a firm that focuses solely on nonprofits, we regularly find ourselves working with clients still in QuickBooks Desktop mostly through our training company, QuickBooks Made Easy for Nonprofits. Many of these smaller nonprofits have one person who has been using QuickBooks Desktop for years, is closing in on retirement, and loath to make the switch to the entirely different QuickBooks.
With this year’s announcement, however, nonprofits are finally making the switch en masse—and they need help. In October 2023, we began offering a QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online conversion service for a fixed fee to any nonprofit ready to make the switch. We advertised via partners and on our website, as well as social media. The demand was, and still is, so great that we have a team of people who do nothing but migrate nonprofits all across the country to QuickBooks Online, averaging 170 migrations a month, and to date have completed more than 3,000 migrations.
Some of these customers turn into ongoing clients because many of them have accountants who do not want to work in QuickBooks Online. I’m honestly shocked that other accountants have not recognized the opportunity and ran with it like we have. The impact on our bottom line has been staggering.
